  61. INSTALLATION

  63.     Installation was easy.  The card is not quite full length and
  64.     easily fits into any of the expansion slots.

  66.     It comes with two setup disks that include the necessary
  67.     device drivers and TCP/IP software.  However, the version of
  68.     the software that came with my card was v1.0 and did not come
  69.     with the diagnostic tools listed in the user manual.  An e-mail
  70.     to Village Tronic quickly revealed an updated set of install
  71.     disks (v1.2) on their ftp site.
  72.  
  73.     Running the installer on the first disk installs all the
  74.     necessary drivers and diagnostic tools.

  76. REVIEW
  77.  
  78.     This is my first ethernet card for an Amiga.  As such, I can't
  79.     compare it to other cards that are available.  However, I can
  80.     tell you that I am extremely pleased with the card.

  82.     The card comes with two types of connectors 10Base2 (chepernet)
  83.     and 10BaseT (twisted pair).  I am using twisted pair (reversed)
  84.     from the Ariadne II directly to the ethernet card in my PC.
  85.  
  86.     It does not come with any ethernet cables, however they do supply
  87.     an ethernet "T" connector and a terminating resistor for 10Base2
  88.     users.

  90.     One thing that was interesting about the card is that it has
  91.     several expansion connectors on it.  However, Village Tronic
  92.     has not announced any expansion options for this board so I
  93.     don't know if they will ever be used for anything.

  95.     I have not tried using the card with the supplied Genesis TCP/IP
  96.     software.  I have been using Miami for my PPP connection to my
  97.     ISP.  In order to use PPP and ethernet at the same time, I had
  98.     to upgrade to Miami Deluxe which is currently in beta test but
  99.     is available.

  101.     Being the networking novice I am and the lack of documentation
  102.     with the beta version of Miami Deluxe, it took me a while to
  103.     get my Amiga configured so that I could use both PPP (internet)
  104.     and ethernet (intranet/LAN) at the same time.  With a little
  105.     patience and persistance, I got it working just perfectly.  So
  106.     now my setup looks something like this:

  108.     PC::Ethernet<--->Ethernet::Amiga::Modem<---->Modem::ISP
  109.  
  110.     I can easily pass files back and forth between my Amiga and my
  111.     PC.  Plus, my Amiga acts as an internet gateway so that I can
  112.     access the internet from either computer seamlessly.

  114.     There is no noticable slow down when accessing the internet
  115.     from the PC.  File transfers between the Amiga and the PC are
  116.     fast and error free.  Using ftp between the two, I've been
  117.     getting around 470 kb/s.

  119. DOCUMENTATION
  120.  
  121.     The board comes with a 34 page user manual.  My only comment about
  122.     it would be that there is only 2 paragraphs about the software
  123.     installation.  This would be fine if the only software provided
  124.     was just the device driver.  There is nothing mentioned about the
  125.     included Genesis TCP/IP software at all. In fact, I didn't even
  126.     know it came with Genesis until I ran the installation.

  128.     However, I should point out that Genesis comes with it's own
  129.     documentation in HTML format.

  131. LIKES
  132.  
  133.     The card appears to be well made, was easy to install and has
  134.     performed above my initial expectations.  Plus it wasn't so
  135.     hard on the wallet.  It was much less expensive than any of the
  136.     other ethernet cards on the market.

  138. DISLIKES AND SUGGESTIONS
  139.  
  140.     It would have been nice if they would have mentioned something
  141.     about Genesis in the user manual.  Also, when I e-mailed Village
  142.     Tronic about the card when it was first announced they told me it
  143.     came with a 2 year warranty.  However, there is no warranty
  144.     information in the user manual.

  146. COMPARISON TO OTHER SIMILAR PRODUCTS
  147.  
  148.     I haven't used any other Amiga ethernet cards, so I can't
  149.     really compare performance.  However, price wise it is much
  150.     less expensive.

  156. VENDOR SUPPORT

  158.     Excellent.  When I inquired about the board via e-mail when it was
  159.     first announced, they answered all my questions quickly and with
  160.     courtesy.  Same for when I contacted them about the updated
  161.     installation disks.

  165.     The user manual doesn't say anything, but I was told via e-mail it
  166.     is 2 years.

  170.     I am very pleased with the board and would recommend it highly.  I
